Sustainable travel by train

The train is at the heart of Hoply. This page explains why we start with the train, what that means for the climate and how we stay honest about the numbers.

Why we start with the train

According to the European Environment Agency (EEA), the train is one of the lowest-carbon forms of motorised land transport. For international journeys within Europe there is often a train connection that can replace a flight or a car. That is why we focus on the train first.

Train versus plane

For comparable journeys, the EEA finds that the train emits on average around five times less COâ‚‚ than the plane. How much you save depends on the route, the occupancy and the type of train. We do not show an exact saving per journey until we can back it up with a verifiable source and a measurement date.

How we help you travel greener

We compare the same journey across several sellers and show direct connections and night trains. That makes it easier to choose the train over the plane, including overnight.

We don't greenwash

We don't promise climate benefits we cannot prove. We only show a COâ‚‚ figure with its source and, as with prices, with the moment it applies to. We don't invent numbers and we don't buy a label.

Beyond the train

Over time we will also add long-distance buses, another low-carbon way to travel internationally. We stay focused on transport between cities and countries, not local transit.
